Joanna Fieldes - New Zealand Artist

Joanna Fieldes (née Abraham), NZ, born 1959 Joanna Fieldes is an Auckland based artist working and exhibiting in the discipline of oil painting since the early 1990’s, successfully exhibiting in solo, joint and group shows in public and private galleries around New Zealand. In more recent times she has extended her practice to that of a printmaker.

She uses her paintings as a starting point to create mostly drypoint/monoprints, working with oil inks, engaging in a painterly style which is in-keeping with her subject matter and artistic practice.

A dominant theme throughout her work is the continuing impact of New Zealand’s colonial past on both its varied landscapes and the life forms, indigenous and introduced, that inhabit them. Ceramic vessels are ‘tableaux staged’ in anthropomorphic guise, taking history for a walk.

Joanna also explores the theme of domesticity using ‘ceramic-like’ objects as metaphors for social comment and thought.
